The client.
Karsan Ramji & Sons is a family-owned company from Kenya, currently managed by two brothers.
The company operates aggregate quarries in different regions of the country.
For many years, they have been suppliers to cement producers,
which eventually led them to identify an opportunity
to enter the cement business themselves.
The challenge.
The main challenge of this project was the client’s total lack of experience in the cement industry.
This required Cemengal to closely support and guide the client throughout the entire process:
understanding the industry, cement production, business strategy, and market positioning.
The project also faced delays due to difficulties in obtaining permits from local communities for the plant location. Finally, the industrial area of Athi River was selected.
This zone hosts all major cement producers supplying Nairobi, the country’s main market.
In just a few streets, all operating grinding plants can be found, and from the top of Ndovu Cement’s silo,
it is possible to see almost every competing facility in operation.
The solution.
In 2013, Karsan Ramji & Sons launched their cement brand under the name NDOVU CEMENT, meaning Elephant in Swahili.
The first installation was a Plug&Grind® Classic grinding plant with a production capacity of ≥12 tph, equipped with two steel silos of approximately 125 m³ each and a semi-automatic two-spout packing machine.
This project achieved significant success in the Kenyan market.
An “outsider” was now competing directly with major regional and multinational corporations .
As a result of this success, in 2017 Ndovu Cement acquired a second plant: a Plug&Grind® XL model with a capacity of ≥30 tph, enabling annual production to exceed 220,000 tpa.
This second project also included a 1,000 m³ silo and a fully automated
8-spout rotary packer with rear truck loading.
Performance
data:
Both plants comply with European environmental regulations, maintaining emissions below 10 mg/Nm³ at the main filter outlets
CEMENGAL has supported this project from its inception, facilitating the entry of a local Kenyan family company into the cement industry. This gradual approach began with a small Plug&Grind® model and, within a few years, expanded with a second parallel line, effectively tripling production.
Today, Ndovu Cement is a recognized player in the Kenyan cement industry, with strong qualitative market presence despite being a relatively small producer in terms of volume.
