Mombasa Cement is a cement industry company originating in Kenya, with additional operations in Uganda under the name Tororo Cement, making it a regional player in East Africa.
In Kenya, the company holds approximately 20% of the national market, operating two plants: one in Vipingo (Mombasa) and another in Athi River.
Recently, its clinker production capacity has been expanded to 2.5 million tpy. At Athi River, Mombasa Cement operates a grinding plant with a capacity of 2 million tpy.
The challenge.
The challenge was significant, as the cement industry is traditionally conservative and the modular grinding concept represented a major shift from conventional solutions.
Clinker production was located in Mombasa, close to the raw material quarry, while all grinding operations were concentrated in Athi River, the largest cement consumption center in Kenya due to its proximity to Nairobi.
At that time, cement sales in Mombasa did not exceed 100,000 tpy.
The solution.
The Plug&Grind® solution effectively addressed the logistical inefficiencies by eliminating the need to transport clinker to Athi River and then ship finished cement back to Mombasa, resulting in a more flexible and cost-effective supply solution.
This unit was the first Plug&Grind® plant ever commercialized.
